Crime.
Drama. Murder. We watch the death of another again and again either
as entertainment, media news fodder or as collective nightmare.
What is it that attracts us so strongly to these ceaseless depictions
of untimely demise and bloody crime?
In
Goggles, Tara Cheyenne Performance's newest comic creep-fest, a
mystery unfolds.
Obsession,
bone chilling fear and black comedy translate into disturbingly
compelling physicality and the sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes
hilarious voice of Goggles.
Tara
Cheyenne Friedenberg acts, dances, and inhabits this character and
brings him to life and death before your unsuspecting eyes!
Director: Sophie Yendole
Sound Designer: Marc Stewart
Lighting Designer: James Proudfoot

We
all remember that guy from high school: Black Sabbath pouring from
his headphones, draped in standard army-issue clothing. Not much
of a talker. You may have made fun of him or, at best, ignored him.
In bANGER, Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg sheds some light on this social
reject and reconciles the differences between us and him.
In
this latest dance-theatre hybrid created by the ever-morphing Friedenberg,
the audience is reeled through the fast-paced, painful world of
high school as seen through the eyes of Ivan, a young man driven
to find out how he fits in. Through heavy music, a lot of head-banging
and a smidge of angst-ridden poetry, we are given a glimpse of the
survival techniques of a boy on the verge of self-discovery.
In bANGER, Friedenberg reels through the fast-paced world of a young
man's painful and driven effort to find a place of his own in the
dog eat dog world of high school. She delves carefully into a boy's
developing mind, dodging and regrouping from the daggers, grenades
and weaponry his external existence shoot recklessly at him. Where
does the sharp disapproving laughter of teenage girls take a young
man in his vulnerable state of growth? Behind the 8 ball from the
get go, Friedenberg's bANGER explores his options in the straitjacketed
world of the otherness of geekdom. From the perspective of a thirty-something
woman, Friedenberg works beyond caricature with a graceful blend
of humour and sincere compassion to explore her character's options
within the otherness of being a social reject.
Throughout,
bANGER demonstrates what Friedenberg does best: tell an engaging
story steeped in her character-driven work, through a playful mix
of movement and text. A stellar score by composer Marc Stewart and
rock-star lighting design by James Proudfoot strongly accents the
work and brings it full-throttle into heavy-metaldom.

Nick & Juanita - Livin' in my dreams
Duration: 75 minutes with intermission
Winner of the People's Choice award at the 2007 Dancing on the Edge
Festival
"Tara
Cheyenne Friedenberg's two-act solo brings theatre and dance together
in an incandescently hilarious performance."
Colin Thomas, Georgia Straight
"strands
of real brilliance"
Deborah Meyers, The Vancouver Sun
Nick
& Juanita- Livin in my dreams dances with the effects of love
on Juanita, a woman who is trying to reconcile her fugitive brain
and her adorably naïve heart, and Nick, a man seemingly lacking
in both. Nick is a smooth, slimy talk show host whose use of a microphone
brings new meaning to the words phallic symbol. His absurd, grandiose
gestures in true Friedenberg style capture a physical compensation
for his lacking emotions. On the other hand, Juanita wears her heart
on her sleeve by continuously abandoning her brain for the next
guy who will show her affection. A classic comic tragedy, we don't
know whether we should laugh or cry at these two hapless personalities.
Effortlessly
leaping from one character to the next, Nick &Juanita demonstrates
what Tara Cheyenne Friedenberg does best: social satire strongly
rooted in character-driven work. Like the bulk of this creative
powerhouse's work, Friedenberg creates rich, multilayered personalities
that audiences can identify with. A highly comic piece, Nick &
Juanita will leave audiences grinning from ear to ear, and perhaps
a little reminiscent of their own forays as human beings searching
for love, affection and understanding.
Nick
& Juanita - Livin' in My Dreams is a co-production of The CanDance
Network Creation Fund, Dance Victoria, Dancing on the Edge Festival,
Live Arts Productions, Now Showing Live Arts, Peterborough New Dance,
and supported by the Dance Section of the Canada Council for the
Arts, BC Arts Council, City of Vancouver, the BC Gaming Commission,
and The Banff Centre production residency program.
